The purpose of this web site is to publish results from the ongoing Smothers DNA Project, a genetic study aimed at finding ancestral connections between today's known Smothers family lines, including all directly allied families such as Smathers, Smeathers, Smithers, Smethers, Smethurst, Smithey, Smiddy or any other variation of the Smothers surname. The actual DNA sample analysis is being conducted by Family Tree DNA, a company specializing in the application of DNA analysis to genealogy, aka genetic genealogy.
We are looking for DNA sample donors to expand our database. So all you fine gentlemen from across the pond with any variation of the name PLEASE come join our project. Feel free to email Nena with questions about the project.
We currently have results from around 50 Participants (DNA donors). With additional participants that have DNA tests pending. Based on 12, 25, and 37 marker Y-DNA STR fingerprint matching, the Participants are divided into ten genetically distinct Smothers Groups, see our results page.
We encourage all participants to join ISOGG, International Society of Genetic Genealogy and so does Family Tree DNA in Houston Texas. It is free to join by filling out a simple form at their website http://www.isogg.org/
Once you become a member you are privately invited to join their ISOGG yahoo groups where you can learn all you want to know and more about genetic DNA and ask questions or find answers you need at any time. You will discover it is very worthwhile to belong to this unique group.
